Kansas City Becomes e-Stewards Enterprise & Helps Communities Connect

Kansas City, Missouri, is narrowing the digital divide and responsibly managing a growing waste stream, electronic waste, aka, e-waste, by joining the e-Stewards Enterprise Program. In managing their electronic assets, e-Stewards Enterprises pledge to use e-Stewards Certified Recyclers and Refurbishers.

“City government, as well as our corporate citizens, must foster digital access to our entire community by finding ways to refurbish computers and accessories for residents who cannot afford them, including residents of public housing as part of the White House Connect Home Initiative,” says Mayor Sly James in the official e-Stewards press release.

The digital divide is a phenomena by which some demographics, often lower-income or rural, have lesser access to modern technology, and fall behind the rest of the population in terms of tech literacy and related opportunities. By refurbishing unwanted technology, and either selling them at a low price or distributing them for free, companies and cities can positively boost these vulnerable populations.

Kansas City is making a statement in choosing e-Stewards Certified Recyclers and Refurbishers for their e-waste management. It’s a commitment to its citizens and the environment to protect both from the toxics inside e-waste and to create equal opportunities for all communities.
