Rishi Sunak has scrapped “burdensome” proposals he says would “force” British people to have seven different bins in their homes. The Prime Minister announced the changes in a speech that signalled a major policy shift. Yesterday (19 September) reports emerged that Rishi Sunak was likely to scrap what he sees as “burdensome” recycling schemes as part of plans to weaken some of the government’s key net zero commitments.

Inside the secret world of waste

Author: Danielle Renwick

In August 2019, the sprawling Kpone landfill, 25 miles from the center of Accra, Ghana, burst into flames. As the city’s only engineered landfill, Kpone had been collecting cast-off clothing from the United States and other wealthy countries for years. As they soaked up rain, the textiles trapped gases and chemicals that emanated from all that decomposing trash until, one day, the landfill exploded. The ensuing fire burned for eight months, engulfing nearby communities in smoke. “Waste has always been inflicted upon the margins,” said Oliver Franklin-Wallis, author of the new book, Wasteland: The Secret World of Waste and the Urgent Search for a Cleaner Future. Waste, he writes, is often exported from rich countries to poor ones, a phenomenon known as “toxic colonialism.”

Revealed: top carbon offset projects may not cut planet-heating emissions

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/19/do-carbon-credit-reduce-emissions-greenhouse-gases

Author: Nina Lakhani

The vast majority of the environmental projects most frequently used to offset greenhouse gas emissions appear to have fundamental failings suggesting they cannot be relied upon to cut planet-heating emissions, according to a new analysis. The global, multibillion-dollar voluntary carbon trading industry has been embraced by governments, organisations and corporations including oil and gas companies, airlines, fast-food brands, fashion houses, tech firms, art galleries and universities as a way of claiming to reduce their greenhouse gas footprint.

Road Hazard: Evidence Mounts on Toxic Pollution from Tires

Source: https://e360.yale.edu/features/tire-pollution-toxic-chemicals

Author: Jim Robbins

For two decades, researchers worked to solve a mystery in West Coast streams. Why, when it rained, were large numbers of spawning coho salmon dying? As part of an effort to find out, scientists placed fish in water that contained particles of new and old tires. The salmon died, and the researchers then began testing the hundreds of chemicals that had leached into the water. A 2020 paper revealed the cause of mortality: a chemical called 6PPD that is added to tires to prevent their cracking and degradation. When 6PPD, which occurs in tire dust, is exposed to ground-level ozone, it’s transformed into multiple other chemicals, including 6PPD-quinone, or 6PPD-q. The compound is acutely toxic to four of 11 tested fish species, including coho salmon.

United Nations Seems to Boost Plastics Industry Interests, Critics Say

Source: https://www.propublica.org/article/united-nations-seems-to-boost-plastics-industry-interests-critics-say

Author: Lisa Song

The plastic crisis has grown exponentially. Despite marketing claims, less than 10% of the plastic waste from recent decades has been recycled. The rest gets incinerated, is buried in landfills or piles up as litter on land and in the water. Today, it is widely acknowledged that everything about plastic — from extracting fossil fuels to make it, to manufacturing products that use it, to disposing of it — can seriously harm public health and the environment. Plastics are a growing driver of climate change. As growth in renewable energy threatens the rule of fossil fuels, that industry is clinging to the creation of new plastics as its Plan B.

Author: Sabrina Shankman

In a typical year, Massachusetts’ state agencies buy roughly 100,000 plastic bottles — water, sodas, you name it. Like other plastic items, these bottles are made from fossil fuels and create climate-warming emissions both when they are manufactured and as they degrade. Citing the climate damage they cause, Governor Maura Healey said she has ordered a government-wide ban, preventing state agencies from buying single-use plastic bottles. Massachusetts is the first state in the country to take that step.

Author: Beyond Plastic

Our country and world’s addiction to plastic is a growing problem, responsible for country-sized swirling gyres of plastic waste in our oceans and growing landfills in our country’s interior. In the U.S. we generate enough plastic waste to fill Cowboys Stadium, the largest professional football stadium in the country, every 16 hours.

Given the ceaseless procession of disasters this summer—from heat domes to hurricanes to the fiery destruction of Lahaina—the slow-motion disaster of plastic pollution may not be top of mind. But the United Nations recently released a “zero draft,” or the principles under consideration, of what could become one of the most consequential treaties ever written: “the international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.”

California has filed a lawsuit against some of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, claiming they deceived the public and downplayed the risks posed by fossil fuels. The civil lawsuit filed in state Superior Court in San Francisco also seeks creation of a fund – financed by the companies – to pay for recovery efforts after devastating storms and fires. Democratic governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement the companies named in the lawsuit – Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips and BP – should be held accountable.

The Environmental Protection Agency waited a month to consult some of its top experts about the risk of dangerous chemical exposure around East Palestine, Ohio, following the fiery derailment of a Norfolk Southern train hauling toxic materials, internal emails show. That delay left at least two EPA scientists surprised and concerned. And it occurred while the agency was deferring to the railroad giant and its web of contractors to spearhead environmental testing, including crafting protocols for sampling soil, water and air for chemicals — a move many saw as a glaring conflict of interest.

Author: Joshua Doherty

The government should ban the export of refuse derived fuel (RDF) before extending the emission trading scheme to cover energy recovery from 2028, according to the Environmental Services Association (ESA). This, according to the association, is required to ensure the export of waste is not encouraged. The call was made in a report entitled ‘a sustainable transition into the Emissions Trading Scheme’, published by the ESA earlier today (14 September). This set out the ESA’s strategy for the successful application of the ETS to waste incinerators, which could place a tax on each tonne of carbon emitted.

Yesterday, we explored the toxic legacy of Saint-Gobain, headline sponsor at this year’s Climate Week NYC. Another confounding choice for a Climate Week sponsor — and the event’s opening ceremony partner — is McKinsey Sustainability, an arm of the global consulting firm McKinsey & Company, which notoriously works for some of the world’s biggest climate polluters. In June, McKinsey — along with major fossil fuel companies — was sued by Multnomah County, Oregon, whose lawsuit argues that the firm helped deceive the public about climate change for decades.
